About the Work

Inspired by bodegas everywhere and dedicated to the women in my life, this piece is part of an ongoing series of imagined bodegas honoring their vital role within our communities. Like the women they are named after, bodegas offer a reliable sense of comfort, sustenance, and belonging, serving as an important extension of the home.

About the Artist

Misla (she/her) is a native New Yorker and Queer mixed media artist specifically interested in the Nuyorican experience. Misla’s work takes a personalized and collective account of the Latinx home and NYC apartments. Her paintings layer collages and found materials to explore the culturally dualistic environments in which she was raised. Misla has a BFA, with the support of the first Kossok Fellowship Award, from Hunter College, and an MFA from Queens College. Her work has been exhibited with The Latinx Project, with the NY Latin American Art Triennial, and as a Heckscher Museum Emerging Artist. Represented by Praxis Gallery, Misla’s work has most recently been shown in a group show with El Museo del Barrio entitled Domesticanx, and a solo exhibition in the John Little Barn at Duck Creek in East Hampton.
