Intervenxions Editorial Guidelines

Intervenxions accepts pitches on a rolling basis—except for scheduled publishing breaks in the summer (June and July) and winter (December and early January). If you have any questions, please reach out to the Intervenxions Deputy Editor, Yara Simón at ys6278@nyu.edu.

What to Pitch

  • Intervenxions publishes reviews, criticism, reporting, interviews, and essays on U.S. Latinx art, politics, and culture between 1,500 and 2,500 words.

  • Currently, we do not publish fiction or poetry, or personal essays, unless they tie into a broader theme. (For example: The Truth About What Happened Here: New Mexico and the Manhattan Project.)

  • Please visit Intervenxions to ensure we haven’t covered an artist or topic in the past.

  • For additional guidance on editorial content and the scope of the publication, we encourage you to review past contributions.

How to Pitch

  • Send an email to Latinxproject@nyu.edu. Do not send pitches as an attachment; please include them in the body of your email.

  • Summarize your pitch into 250 words and include a brief biography (200 words or less).

  • Do not include any attachments.

  • Do not send completed drafts or manuscripts.

  • We kindly ask that previous contributors wait at least one submission cycle, i.e. a semester, to submit another pitch. As a low-volume publication with limited resources, we would like to provide emerging writers and scholars opportunities to engage with our platform.

Submissions

  • Please submit your draft in the Google Doc that Intervenxions provides you. PDFs and Word documents take extra work to upload onto our content management system.

  • For interviews, have audio or transcript available upon request. *Please note: You don’t need to submit interview questions beforehand.*

  • Include high-quality images that Intervenxions has permission to republish (learn more here). Please do not send images without verifying copyright restrictions and permissions.

  • If you need an extension, please let us know as soon as possible. We will seek to accommodate you.

  • We issue kill fees equal to half the agreed-upon honorarium for unpublished drafts.

Intervenxions Style Guide

  • Intervenxions is for a general audience. Prioritize clear and concise language that is accessible. Aim to strike a balance between a casual, yet informed tone. (Examples here, here, and here.)

  • Hyperlink online sources; only use endnotes for sources that are not digitally available.

  • Use the Chicago Manual of Style.

  • Avoid passive voice.

  • Aim for short grafs (three to five sentences). Blocks of text can be harder to read.

  • The thesaurus is your friend. Avoid redundancy, such as the same redundant word or redundant phrase used twice in an already redundant sentence or paragraph. (Basically the opposite of this last sentence.)

  • Don’t italicize words in a foreign language unless for emphasis. Also, Spanglish is cool.

FAQs

How do you select pitches?

The editorial staff and board meet monthly to review submissions. We also post open calls bi-annually, in the spring and fall, on our social media pages and newsletter. Lastly, we often solicit pitches to ensure a range of perspectives within the field of Latinx Studies with a strong emphasis on Latinx art and criticism.

Where do I send my pitch?

Please contact Intervenxions by emailing Latinxproject@nyu.edu. Include “Intervenxions pitch” in the subject line.

Can I reprint Intervenxions?

Yes, we only ask for proper attribution and a link to the original article. However, we cannot grant permission for the photos featured on Intervenxions.

When will I hear back about my pitch?

You can expect a response within three to four weeks unless otherwise instructed. We won’t respond to pitches that do not adhere to our guidelines.

Do contributors receive compensation?

The Latinx Project offers a modest honorarium for independent writers, graduate students, and freelance contributors. This includes faculty not currently in a tenured position. Our rates are as follows:

  • $300 for reviews (book, film, art exhibition, television, music, etc.), interviews, short essays (up to 1,500 words)

  • $400 for original articles, profiles, and long-form content (1,500 words or more)

In certain cases, we can offer a modest stipend for photographers or other collaborators.
