Out Here We Is

16 x 20 in.

Hand embroidery with cotton, silk, and metallic thread on linen

About the Work

My embroidery work weaves a generational history and retrospection of Puerto Rican needleworkers by referencing the continued modern-day demands of labor and socioeconomic/ecological realities. This new series of works combines the soon-to-be gentrified landscapes of both The Bronx and Puerto Rico, identifying places and spaces of urban ecotones - a transition area between two biological communities where they meet and integrate.

About the Artist

Self-taught multimedia artist Melissa Calderón creates bodies of conceptual work around central themes exploring social and political landscapes, drawing upon historical and philosophical references of power, fragility and perception
